Tarsilado Amaral, (born Sept. 1, 1886, Capivari, Braz.—died Jan. 17, 1973, São Paulo), Brazilian painter who blended local Brazilian content with international avant-garde aesthetics. Amaral, who is usually simply called Tarsila, began studying academic painting in 1916. In 1920 she traveled to Paris, where she took classes at the Académie Julian, SãoPaulo. Tarsila do Amaral’s São Paulo is one painting in a series known as “pau-brasil,” which included characteristically Brazilian landscapes, both rural and urban. In terms of form, Tarsila developed a bold, stylized approach to rendering forms that could capture the dynamism of the country’s rapid rapid modernization.
